Haomiao Wang – MSc Medical Biotechnology

I am Haomiao and I am from China. After my Bachelor I moved to the Netherlands to continue my studies. I think that this is a really valuable experience for me, since I can learn from so many people of different backgrounds as well as learning a lot from the different courses. At the same time this experience allows me to travel to a lot of places and I really enjoy discovering the cultures in Europe.

After this year I got a lot of knowledge, both from courses and from people I’ve been working with.

Could you describe yourself and your educational background?

I am Haomiao and I am from China. During my bachelor I did my major in Biotechnology and I liked this subject so much that I decided to continue with it in my master. I was suggested from one of my teacher to apply at WUR and here I am. At the beginning of the master I was undecided if choosing the Molecular and Cellular specialization or the Medical, but I decided for the latter as it suits me best. In specific, what made me decide to choose the Medical specialization were the Molecular Virology and Immunotechnology courses, which are really excellent and interesting courses.

What do you like best about living in the Netherlands and in Wageningen specifically?

I live in Bornsesteeg so it is really close to campus and to the gym and I really like it. During my free time I play badminton and football and I also joined the badminton association. I really like that most of the people are into sports. The gym in the evening is really busy and it is nice to see. Beside this I really like the life in Netherlands, in general. I like the nice environment and the nice air. To add to this, I think everyone is really friendly and I like the really positive attitude toward life.

Would you chose this Master programme again?

Definitely, this master allows you to choose courses from really different fields and broaden your knowledge a lot. I also like the flexibility of the master, for example, I will do my master thesis in the chair group of Toxicology and I haven’t had the chance to follow any of their courses but I will follow some courses later and it is nice to have this possibility. To add to this, the fact that you can decide between an internship and a research practice is a good opportunity to see both the academia and industry sides before starting to work in one of these.
