Jorick Meeuwisz – Marketing Manager Podcast

The way critical thinking is encouraged at WUR was very distinctive compared to other universities I know.

Why did you choose to study Consumer Studies in for Wageningen?

In Wageningen I studied Consumer Studies. The integral and multi-disciplinary approach is really strong: from economics to sociology and statistics. The power is in the combination. Getting to know a broad toolkit helps in understanding consumer behaviour and also is a fast-track in your professional career.

What is your current job? And how relates that to your study at Wageningen?

As a marketing manager podcast I am working in a fast developing part of media usage. Penetration, usage and supply of podcasts have been rising exponentially in the last couple of years. This brings some major changes in consumer behaviour: listening on demand, fragmentation in supply (massive number of available podcasts and listening in different contexts (while travelling, running, housekeeping, and so on). Because this is all digital, this generates a lot of (behavioural) data. The consumer decision making process is really interesting to analyse and anticipate on.

What experiences did you really like during your study?

For me the combination of developing academic skills in an applied environment was something I learned a lot from. Building an analytical skillset helps in getting ready for a professional career.  The multidisciplinary approach of Consumer Studies is beneficial for a professional career, this helps in standing out from all the different ‘superspecialists’ in our field.

How was studying/living in Wageningen for you?

The way critical thinking is encouraged at WUR was very distinctive compared to other universities I know. In my perception, this really is part of the culture at WUR.
