The 2023 maximum for free-of-charge open access publishing in Springer Nature journals is expected to be reached on 7 November 2023. Once the quota is reached, WUR authors will have to pay the Article Processing Charges (APCs).

Springer Nature and the VSNU agreed that Dutch researchers can publish up to 2080 articles Open Access without extra costs in 2023. The maximum number is expected to be reached on 7 November 2023. We'll keep you informed about the quota's status on our website.

What are the consequences?

If your manuscript is accepted between the moment the cap is reached and 1 January 2024, Springer will still offer to publish your article Open Access, but the costs will no longer be covered by the consortium agreement. You will receive an invoice.

If Springer Nature informs you that you have to cover the costs for publishing Open Access, please do not pay the invoice. Immediately email the Open Access team of WUR Library.

Alternative routes to Open Access in Springer

Publish OA after an embargo period and without an open license

  • You can publish your article in 2023 behind a paywall and make it public six months after the first publication, by using the Taverne Amendment (article 25fa) of the Dutch Copyright law. Please check whether you fulfil the Taverne requirements. You can use the Taverne Amendment by filling in the online participation form. This will take about two minutes.
  • Self-archive the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM). Please email the AAM of your article to the Open Access team upon publication, and include the DOI if available. We'll make the AAM available in Research@WUR when the publisher’s embargo period expires.
