Inaugural lecture Ewout Frankema available online

‘Major historical civilisations emerged because they managed to harness the forces of nature and create the agricultural surpluses needed to feed armies, cities and treasuries. The recent Asian renaissance is rooted in a veritable ‘Green Revolution’. Will Africa be able to sustain its current growth revival? Much will depend on whether African societies can keep agricultural production in line with human reproduction. A global historical perspective helps to assess the preconditions for accommodating this challenge.’
