UPS-CESBIO

As one of the top research establishments in France, counting 2 784 teachers and teacher-researchers along with 1510 researchers from national and research bodies divided up into 72 laboratories, Université Paul Sabatier is active in public research at the highest level, working with excellence clusters and creating numerous partnerships with major scientific bodies. Recognised across Europe and all over the world, UPS research laboratories function in a scientific research context that works both with the core disciplines, and transversal scientific applications, sharing the results of their work to increase productivity in core research and encourage knowledge transfer.

CESBIO is a research laboratory of Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III, with the following third parties: CNES, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales; CNRS, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique which will collaborate to BIO_SOS. CESBIO is represented by Université Paul Sabatier's. The objectives of CESBIO are to contribute to the progress in the understanding of the functioning of continental surfaces and their interactions with the climate and man, with an emphasis on the utilization of remotely sensed data. In this framework, it is imperative to not only develop physical models, but also to be capable to provide scenarios of the evolution of these surfaces and their properties under climatic and anthropic pressures.

CESBIO is organized into two scientific teams, each having a complementary theme which corresponds both to the competence of the laboratory and to pressing issues related to the biosphere. (Physics and remote sensing of continental surface; Eco-hydrological modeling of terrestrial surfaces). The laboratory also contributes to the development and the promotion of space related tools while participating in the definition, the application and the scientific use of space missions and is PI for the SMOS and Venμs missions. CESBIO uses and contributes to the development of the ORFEO Toolbox, OTB, remote sensing image processing library. OTB is used in the Venμs mission operational ground segment for the generation of level 2 and level 3 products. CESBIO also develops land use and cover change image processing chains based on OTB.

CNES is third party of UPS. Founded in 1961, the Centre National d・Etudes Spatiales (CNES) is the government agency responsible for shaping and implementing France・s space policy in Europe. Its task is to invent the space systems of the future, bring space technologies to maturity and guarantee France・s independent access to space. CNES is a pivotal player in Europe・s space programme, and a major source of initiatives and proposals that aim to maintain France and Europe・s competitive edge. It conceives and executes space programmes with its partners in the scientific community and industry, and is closely involved in many international cooperation programmes・the key to any farreaching space policy.

CNRS is third party of UPS. The National Center of Scientific Research (Centre national de la recherche scientifique or CNRS) is the largest governmental research organization in France and the largest fundamental science agency in Europe. Main role: development of the EODHaM first and second stage modules. Link to the ORFEO system.

UPS participation started on 15 Dec 2012 as per Amendment n. 1

Staff involved

Jordi INGLADA

Jordi INGLADA received the Telecommunications Engineer degree from both the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain, and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne, Brest, France, in 1997 and the Ph.D. degree in signal processing and telecommunications in 2000 from Université de Rennes 1, Rennes, France. He is currently with the Centre National d’Études Spatiales (French Space Agency), Toulouse, France, working in the field of remote sensing image processing at the CESBIO laboratory. He has been head of the development of the ORFEO Toolbox (http://www.orfeo-toolbox.org) remote sensing image prcessing software for 4 years. He is in charge of the development of image processing algorithms for the operational exploitation of Earth observation images, mainly in the field of multitemporal image analysis for land use and cover change. Dr. Inglada is an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING. Main role: he will contribute to WP5, all the Tasks, for the development of first and second stage modules.

Isabel RODES

Isabel RODES holds a MSc in Computer Vision and Robotics and a MSc in Computer Based Information Systems. She works at CESBIO towards a PhD on the subject of landcover map production for very large areas using unsupervised approaches. She will contribute to WP5, all the Tasks. Main role: he will contribute to WP5, all the Tasks, software development of second stage modules.
