The University of Bari is a public institution founded in 1924 that includes 12 faculties covering a wide range of research areas and scientific disciplines. Being an international center of competence, the Faculty of Agriculture generates and disseminates knowledge through research on agriculture, forestry and landscape planning. The results are directed towards a practical application on these fields creating a basis for sustainable use and management of rural and forest resources.

Paola Mairota
Paola Mairota - PhD Researcher in Forest and Landscape Ecology. Her main interests are in methodological and applied issues relevant to the ecology and management of Mediterranean forest and semi-natural vegetation ecosystems for biodiversity maintenance at the landscape level, the assessment of the habitat function of riparian corridors of Mediterranean ephemeral streams, and ecological succession on abandoned fields and forest plantations in Mediterranean environment. She as contributed to the MEDALUS II (EV5V-CT92-128, 194,165,166) Project IV studying PAC and RD policies implications for soil degradation/ desertification in Mediterranean Europe. She was consultant within EIA and assessment of implications of plans and projects in SCI and SPA, dealing with landscape and priority habitat (Festuco-Brometalia, 6210, and Thero-Brachipodietea, 6220 - Directive 92/43/ECC) fragmentation. She is member of the IUFRO - 8-01-02 Landscape Ecology and of IALE.
Raffaele Lafortezza
Raffaele Lafortezza - PhD Researcher in Landscape Ecology. His main interests are in ecosystem modelling at multiple spatial and temporal scales, quantitative assessment of forest fragmentation and biodiversity, analysis of ecological disturbances including forest fires, spatial modelling of point-level data, ecosystem services associated to green spaces and ecological networks.He has accumulated a wide-range of experience in spatial modelling and landscape issues through numerous research projects and scientific collaborations conducted worldwide, including: BioFrag (Isaac Newton Trust – UNEP-WCMC); INTERFACE (British Council); KYOTO-INV (ESA - DUP-II); BALU (ESA - DUP-I). He has (co-)authored many peer-reviewed articles and two books on landscape ecology and GIS-based modelling. He worked as Research Associate at the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge. He is the European Coordinator of the Landscape Ecology WG of the IUFRO- 8-01-02 and IUFRO representative for the IALE-IUFRO WG on Forest Landscape Ecology.
