Land Soil Crop Information Services for Climate-Smart Agriculture in East Africa

On Tuesday, January 25th 2022, the development of Land Soil Crop Information Services hubs to support climate-smart agriculture in Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda was launched.

The project, Land Soil Crop Information Services (LSC Hubs) will focus on the development of  sustainable land, soil, crop information hubs in national agricultural research organizations. Moreover, the effectiveness of national agricultural knowledge and innovation systems will be enhanced which contribute to rural transformation and climate-smart agriculture in East Africa.

The LSC Hubs are developed by a consortium of six key partners:

  • Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR)
  • Kenya Agriculture and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO)
  • Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB)
  • ISRIC - World Soil Information
  • Wageningen University & Research
  • International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

The work is supported through collaborations with the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA), ICRAF World Agroforestry, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and German Aerospace Center (DLR).

Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation manages the project on behalf of Wageningen University & Research. Additionally, Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation contributes to ensuring that the LSC hubs’ information optimally serve stakeholder’s information needs and to the sustainable embedding of the hubs in the hosting organizations and in the wider institutional settings.

The LSC Hubs will be deployed for Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda with the aim to scale-up to other African countries.

This four-year project (2021-2024) is jointly funded by the European Union's Development Smart Innovation through Research in Agriculture (DeSIRA) program, The Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a contribution from ISRIC.
