Modelling Food Systems across multiple scales

Climate change, population growth, urbanisation and policy choices all influence food systems. We use models to come up with estimates of those influences. Often, a variety of models is needed as a way of creating a comprehensive picture of the effects. This project will improve the way in which we can combine the use of different models and how we can use those models to perform analyses of the food system as a whole.

The ‘Multiple scales’ project will develop models that can help us understand the dynamics of food systems.

Combining models from different disciplines and multiple scales will enable us to perform integrated analyses of food system issues that cut across different scales. We will focus on the following specific topics:

  1. Spatial variation in income development and the impact of this on the local environment and demand for food
  2. Modelling agricultural practices and how these practices influence the production of the desired food
  3. The way in which national approaches to food usage has specific impacts around the world

The models we will use include MAGNET, MAGNETgrid, BIOSPACS, LPJml, IMAGE, and SIDD. Based on these models, we will develop a broad reporting framework, so we can come up with a comprehensive picture of how a particular scenario affects the food system.
