We are very excited to welcome you to a hackathon on the topic of designing sound emitted by future electric vehicles (EVs)! We are looking for design, engineering, and computer science BSc, MSc, or PhD students.

πŸš— Scope of challenge

Over 270,000 fatal pedestrian traffic accidents occur yearly worldwide, with most happening during road crossing.Causes include misjudging crossing gaps and time, low visibility, and noticeability. EVs, due to their lack of combustion engine and quiet nature, pose a challenge for vulnerable road users (VRUs), such as pedestrians and cyclists. Augmenting EV sound levels may aid safety but add to urban noise pollution. The goal of this hackathon isto explore the design of optimal synthetic sound signals for EVs to provide maximum information and noticeability to VRUs while keeping noise pollution to a minimum.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ’»Plan for the day In groups, students will first explore how EVs should sound in the future. Then, they will have a whole day to design such sounds and prepare a demonstrator. At the end of the day, each group will have 5–10 min to present their work for a chance to win one of the prizes.
