Rick Faesen: Nematology showed me beautiful new sides of science and taught me a lot of independence

I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to complete my thesis at Nematology, and I can honestly say that it was an incredible experience. Over the last seven months, I had the chance to delve into the fascinating world of potato cyst nematodes and root exudates, and I am proud of the work that I accomplished.

Throughout my thesis, I felt incredibly supported by the department and my supervisor. The open and communicative atmosphere made it easy for me to seek guidance and feedback whenever I needed it, and I always felt like my ideas were valued and respected. In addition, the chance to present and discuss my findings and those of others in our work meetings helped me grow as a scientist and feel more confident in my abilities.

Beyond the academic benefits, however, what really stood out to me about my time at Nematology was the people. The department was filled with amazing individuals who were passionate about their work, and I felt lucky to be a part of such a supportive and collaborative community. From drinks after symposia to discussions over lunch, I always looked forward to spending time with my colleagues.

Overall, my thesis was an unforgettable experience that helped me grow both personally and academically. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such amazing people, and I can't wait to see where my career in science takes me next.
