Leon ten Hoopen: Whenever I faced challenges or needed guidance, I could count on their support, which made the learning process much more enjoyable

For the past half year, I had the opportunity to do my thesis at the department of Nematology. I worked on the project ‘Golgi on a chip’, which focusses on setting up an in vitro enzymatic glycosylation system that can be used to selectively extend glycans of pharmaceutical proteins. The focus of my thesis was the production of glycoenzymes in E. coli and N. benthamiana. I worked with various laboratory techniques which were new to me and learned new ways of thinking that improved my understanding of the subject.

One of the standout aspects of my time at the department of Nematology was the supportive environment. The people working there, including the researchers, lab technicians, and fellow students, were always willing to help me and share their expertise. Whenever I faced challenges or needed guidance, I could count on their support, which made the learning process much more enjoyable. Additionally, the open nature helped me in engaging in scientific discussions, seeking advice or simply having a friendly chat. I felt comfortable approaching anyone here.

Overall, my experience with the department of Nematology was pleasant and educational. I am thankful for the wonderful time the half past year and I believe that this experience has contributed to my personal and academic growth.
