World Wildlife Fund and Wageningen University cooperate in monitoring illegal logging.
Internationally it is agreed illegal logging should be ended by 2030. Monitoring and prediction of logging locations is a difficult task as the areas are often inaccessible with limited surveillance.
At the Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing of Wageningen University a system is implemented that helps to predict where illegal logging takes place. The system makes use of Artificial Intelligence to combine radar satellite observations with local knowledge to determine illegal forest tracks. These tracks are a clear indicator of where logging will take place in the near future. This knowledge makes it easier for law enforcement to act against illegal logging. In cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund, in four years’ time the monitoring system will be implemented for twelve different countries.
