Hitchhikers guide to using drones and auditory cues to scare flying moths to death in greenhouses

The goal of this project is to understand the mechanisms behind in-flight escape behaviour of moths caused by auditory cues from their predators like bats (and drones in this case).

Dayo L. Jansen

Together with various parties from Wageningen University & TU Delft and the industrial partner PATS indoor drones solutions, We want to use this information to improve the effectiveness of drone-based pest control in horticulture. By doing this, I aim to use fundamental knowledge in an applied greenhouse environment to reduce the need for pesticides and improve bio-inspired drone designs.

Currently I have two projects running.

1.How to create a setup at EZO for auditory experiments on moth hearing? During this project you will learn all about using lasers, speakers and microphones!

2.How to determine behavioural trends in moth escape flight in greenhouses after being scared by sound? During this project you will be using thousands of tracks from scared flying moths in greenhouses collected in actual greenhouses in the West side of the Netherlands!

So are you inspired and thrilled to work together with biologists and engineers alike to create greener and more technological advanced solutions in greenhouses? Let me know!

This project is performed in colloboration with PATS indoor Drones Solutions (TU Delft).
