Transitioning from intensive to extensive farming by renewing water management has the potential to reduce trade-offs between provisioning and other ecosystem services, yet has consequences for farmer livelihoods and farmers’ social dynamics, also as a result of externalities. My PhD thesis aims to improve our knowledge on the social consequences of  water retention measures on both the individual level (farmer well-being) and on the collective level (group dynamics). This knowledge will provide insight into how incentive schemes can be designed in order to effectively stimulate the transition from intensive to extensive forms of agriculture. Case study research will be done within eastern parts of the Netherlands (sandy soils).
