Dr. Van Nieuwenhuijzen has 25 years of experience in circular water treatment and environmental impact, resources recovery and renewable energy projects all over the world; with a focus area in Europe, Afrika, Middle-East and especially South East Asia. Dr.ir. Arjen van Nieuwenhuijzen holds the position of R&D and Innovation Director Circular and Biobased Solutions within the Business Line Energy, Water and Environment. As leading expert in water and resources recovery from sewage he is inventor and initiator of the Water and Resource Refinery (Waterfabriek2.0). Within Witteveen+Bos he is founding father and project director of the corporate +Plus Innovation Progamme

As part-time Associate Professor at Wageningen University & Research he holds the position as Industry Principle Investigator on Circular Urban Resources at the AMS Institute in Amsterdam.

Within his 25 years of professional experience within Witteveen+Bos (as R&D and Innovation Director Circular and Climate Neutral Solutions) in design and engineering, research and development and business development he managed and conducted projects as project manager and senior expert regarding integrated water management, waste water and potable water treatment and sludge management for water and wastewater companies, national governments, municipalities and industries. During his career he developed ample experience in the field of planning, design and commissioning of medium and large (used)water treatment and recycling plants and sludge treatment, strategic studies, education and training, review and quality control, as well as innovation management. During the last 10 years Dr. van Nieuwenhuijzen developed several circular solutions in water, sludge and resources treatment as well as CO2 orientated designs and carbon capture utilization projects and patents. As ambassador Circular Design he is actively involved in teaching and applying the W+B Sustainable Design Principles.
