A team of WUR staff members, Mattijs Smits (ENP), Omid Noroozi (ELS), and Hansje Eppink (ELS) have been involved in a project called: Development of Energy Education in the Mekong area (DEEM).

Over the last three years, this team has frequently (almost twice per year) visited Southeast Asian countries (i.e. Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia). In this project, the WUR team (as an ELS and ENP cooperation) together with other European partners – University of Turku, Finland; Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Finland; and Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF), Germany – have provided intensive trainings and workshops for local faculty members to facilitate futures and sustainability thinking, to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, to build public-private partnerships, and to include innovative teaching methods in their curriculum related to sustainable energy.

In this project, Omid and WUR team have provided participants with different active and participatory teaching methods and also contributed to the curriculum developments of different universities. The impression is that, the policy makers of these universities and also the participants are very keen and interested to make a big change toward moving from teacher-centered approach to student-centered approach  which could eventually help these countries improve their energy education programs. Upon the positive results, the EU has decided to fund this project for another 3 years which we look forward to starting this project in November 2019.
