Food security in a metropolitan state: Singapore delegation visits WageningenUR
On Wednesday 25 June 2014, a delegation from Singapore visited Wageningen UR. Singapore is a highly urbanized country, with little room for agriculture within its state boundaries. The Singapore government recognizes the challenges their country faces regarding food security and food quality. Both public and private sector are actively searching for innovative technologies to produce high quality food.
The delegation was headed by Minister of State for National Development Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman. Ms Tan Poh Hong, who is the Chief Executive of the Agri-Food and Veterinary authority of the Southeast Asian state, was also present, together with other government representatives and a number of fish- and vegetable farmers.
The Singaporeans spoke with Prof Dr Raoul Bino of Food & Biobased Research, visited the test facility of the Fisheries and Aquaculture department and were presented with the latest insights on the subjects of Recirculation Aquaculture Systems, Protected Horticulture and Metropolitan Food Supply by researchers of Wageningen UR.
While they were in The Netherlands, the group also visited Food Valley, a number of innovative fish farms and an automated poultry farm.
