Cathelijne Stoof on Euronews in panel discussion on forest fires

What about the increase in forest fires in Europe? To what extent is the growth in fires attributable to climate change and what can we do in the fight against forest fires? On these and other questions surrounding the topic, Cathelijne Stoof, WUR expert on wildfires, discusses on Euronews.

According to Stoof, it seems that the number of wildfires is also increasing in the Netherlands, and that more extreme fires are a possibility here, but she says there is a lack of good data. Stoof: "People traditionally do not associate the Netherlands with forest fires. In the 1990s, they stopped collecting data here because the number of fires was decreasing and people thought it was no longer a problem. But fires are there and keep coming. The challenge is that our society is not prepared."

According to Stoof, there is a lack of knowledge and education and no landscape management policy that considers the risk of fires.
