Queuing up for water in Kathmandu

February 11-13, 2014, Dik Roth co-organized and attended the inception workshop of the NWO-CCMCC project "Climate Policy, Conflicts and Cooperation in Peri-Urban South Asia: Towards Resilient and Water-Secure Communities", held in Kathmandu, Nepal. This project deals with the growing water insecurities in peri-urban areas in Bangladesh, India and Nepal, caused by urbanization and current ways of dealing with the growing water needs of expanding urban areas. Possible effects of climate change may further aggravate these insecurities. As the picture from Kathmandu shows, water security in urban areas is not guaranteed either, and highly depends on a variety of public and private sources. For many poor urban citizens (especially women and children), queuing up for water is a daily reality of life.
