Welcome to José Barrena Ruiz, our new PhD colleague

After finishing his bachelor, he started living in small fisheries communities in Central Chile, where he worked for more than three years with fisher unions and federations in areas such as fishery co-management, social engagement and resource leverage, as a member of the Chilean Foundation for Poverty Eradication. In 2007, he moved to the city of Valdivia, Southern Chile, where he worked as a professional of the Foundation Un Techo para Chile in finding permanent housing solutions for poor people of the marginal neighborhoods of the region. In 2012 he obtained a Master degree in Rural Development by Universidad Austral de Chile, developing a thesis on the valuation of cultural ecosystem services. Thereafter, José worked as a researcher and lecturer in Universidad Austral de Chile, participating in different national and international academic projects in the areas of ecosystem services, agricultural economics, and climate change.

José began working as a PhD student at ENP from January 1 of 2016. His research is focused on the analysis of small-scale fishery governance in Magallanes Region, Southern Chile. José is interested in integrating the approaches of social networks, social-ecological system and sustainable livelihoods in his current research. José’s PhD research is framed within the Research Centre "Dynamics of High Latitude Marine Ecosystems", funded by Chilean National Commission of Science and Technology (CONICYT).
