From 24-26 June the Mare Academic Conference: People and the Sea VIII will take place. This years conference theme is 'Geopolitics of the Oceans'.

The MARE conference will focus on 'Geopolitics of the Oceans'. Oceans and coasts figure prominently in the geopolitics of our era. Areas in the East and South China Seas and the Black Sea are heavily contested by various nation states, while the Arctic, with its proven oil reserves, is another obvious realm of contestation, with adjacent countries vying to stake their respective claims and environmental movements trying hard to restrict the anticipated damage.

In addition to the theme of geopolitics, the People and the Sea VIII conference is open to those with more classical interests. These are included in the six streams (Geopolitics of the Oceans, Maritime Governance, Social Relations and Culture, Fisheries Management, Knowledge production and Coastal Threats and Vulnerability) but do not hesitate to apply, even if your topic does not fit neatly into one of them. We always make room for the innovative and the maverick. More information can be found here.

Participants can propose the presentation of papers, but also of posters and other visual materials, such as documentary films and (small) exhibitions.

Deadline for proposals: February 14th, 2015 at 12 a.m. (GMT)

Please submit your proposal electronically to the conference organizer by 14th February 2015 via organizer email  mareconference-gpio@uva.nl
