Government regulations on biotechnology and genetically modified crops often lead to substantially higher investment costs. Those in turn cause a lower level of product development, a concentration in the industry, a re-arrangement of research priorities, and a shift of research and development to countries with less strict regulations. This trend even led to damaging sustainable development from the viewpoint of environment and public health.
